Your Laughter: What Brings It On For You?
Your laughter is unique, while laughter, itself, is universal. Laughter is the shortest distance between two people, said Victor Borge. He was a Danish comedian, conductor and pianist, affectionately known as The Clown Prince of Denmark.
Do You Like to Laugh?
I do. In fact I’d say that laughter has been the glue through life’s tough times that has held me together. My husband and our children are funny, and even our dog is a clown. There are people, however, who do not like to laugh because it creates a sense of being out of control. I’ve witnessed this in my private psychotherapy practice. If there has been abuse, through laughter at a person, as opposed to with, there are lasting, invisible scars. There are cultural differences regarding laughter among people as well. Some cultures embrace laughter as an expression of robust living, while others view it as a breach of decorum.
What Do You Find Funny?
This week’s focus on Enchanted Key #6-Humor is about what YOU find funny. We are not all created equal in this department. I’ve given workshops in which near riots have broken out because attendees disagreed about what and who is funny.
Different Types of Humor
Are you a fan of bathroom humor or not? (I’m not but many children and more men than women, are.) Are you a person who splits your sides at visual slipped-on-a-banana-peel humor? Do you enjoy British humor? Clowns-funny or nightmare material?
Personally, when I see videos that make fun of others, I cringe. I also don’t think that it’s funny when someone has the potential to be hurt, physically or otherwise, by a prank. Along those lines, some folks find it hilarious when pets are dressed in costumes and others abhor that. Of course neither animals nor people should ever be injured or compromised for the sake of a joke.
I loved (and still do) the quick-witted humor of Robin Williams. I also think Vince Vaughn is hilarious, as is Billy Crystal, Lewis Black, and Steve Carell. Kristen Wiig, Tina Fey and Melissa McCarthy are favorite female comediennes.
Your Fav Funny Films
I adore the movies, Wedding Crashers, Four Christmases, Bridesmaids (with the exception of the bathroom humor scenes!) Date Night, Hitch, and Young Frankenstein.
Humorous TV Shows
Sitcoms that are worthy of replaying are Friends, Will & Grace, Big Bang Theory, as well as classic episodes from Saturday Night Live.
Inside jokes or one-liners that recall whole scenes from a show can bring joy to dull moments.
In Search of Humor
I invite you to spend this week thinking about what tickles your funny bone.
