TRADITIONS ENSLAVING YOU?
Traditions you created long ago enslaving you today? We can change that. Maybe twenty years ago you began a tradition of having 50 people over for a weekend long open-house to celebrate the holidays. Perhaps for the past five years you’ve been saying you need to change it up but the Dragons of Tradition tell you otherwise.
WHAT THE DRAGONS OF TRADITION TELL YOU
“People look forward to it,” they say. “It’s the only way to catch up and see everyone without driving or flying everywhere.” “It’s easier to host it, then you don’t have to go anywhere and be out in the craziness.” This Dragon chatter may sound familiar to you.
Maybe you bought gifts for all of your children’s teachers but now that they’re in high school, the number of teachers has grown! You don’t have to keep up with that, just because you began it. Maybe you generously gifted friends and your list of friends has grown!
Current budget, time, and energy considerations can change your traditions.
HOW TO ASSESS IF CHANGE IS IN ORDER
- What long-time holiday traditions have you established?
- Which ones still make your heart sing and bring you joy?
- Which traditions have become a burdensome chore?
- How would you like to celebrate?
- What do you have to get past in order to implement these changes?
DON’T LISTEN TO THE DRAGON CHATTER
No doubt you’ll encounter Dragon chatter from inside of your thoughts but don’t be surprised if you get some from others as well. People may love the traditions you’ve created but take no part in the planning, expense, energy, and hard work that it takes to pull it off.
So, what would your new tradition look like?
When you get clear, tell everyone about it in January and then again in July. Remind them as the holidays approach that new traditions are being created.
