Destination Hikes-Chart Your Journey Toward Enchantment

Destination Hikes. To me, the very phrase is filled with adventure and enchantment waiting to be discovered. What is a destination hike? It’s one in which there is a specific place at which you plan to arrive. It could be a clearing, a mountain view, or a waterfall. Maybe it’s a special area to pitch a tent, make camp, or simply enjoy a picnic.

Hiking-The Means To An End

For those who are not avid hikers, the hike can be more appealing if it’s a means to an end. Walking through woods, streams, or rocky terrain exists for the sole purpose of arriving at the cool spot at the end of the trail. It’s a mind game that can offer a reason to hike for those that just don’t see its purpose.

Destinations-Hiking With Purpose

This most often applies to Type-A personalities, used to accomplishing something beyond walking a few miles into a thicket and then walking out. Also, it includes the majority of nearing-middle-school-aged children who would rather be hanging out with their friends and staring at video games. But tell them that they are going to arrive at an awesome destination at which they can take selfies to post on Instagram and it’s a whole new ballgame.

Go The Distance

I know from experience that having an anticipated destination spurs me to keep forging ahead when I might otherwise turn back. This is especially true when other members in the group keep saying things like, “Come on, we’re almost there, where we’ll get to see a rainbow in the waterfall if the sun is just right!” The photo was on one such trip when family members kept urging me to climb higher, higher up, to arrive at the rushing waterfall. I admit that it was breathtaking in more ways than one. Add the exciting effects provided by Mother Nature, which included a thunderous lightning storm, and in addition to the beauty, I was grateful to have made it through safely.

Enchanted Breath

So for this week’s Enchanted Breath, let’s begin by imagining arriving at a pre-set destination to which you will hike. Take a few deep and cleansing breaths in and out. Feel the clean, fresh air entering and exiting your nostrils. Let the tension melt away from your muscles and nerves. Picture yourself rounding the corner that opens on to an amazing natural site. Envision yourself enjoying the site for several minutes, feeling proud of yourself for having done it. Let the experience of “ahh” seep into your body and soul. Return to the present and set aside some time to plan a destination hike.

Enchanted Breaths are the “ahh, the haha, and the aha! of life.”
