Clearing Clutter. It’s a new month and so we’re beginning a deeper look at how to apply the next Enchanted Key to daily life. This is #5 of 10, the Key to Reduced Clutter. This Key offers such immediate gratification. When a space is cluttered and then you clear it, presto! It’s transformed and you feel it all throughout your being. Freshly mowed grass. A haircut. You get it.
A tiny, little book that carries a big, powerful message is, Marie Kondo’s, the life-changing magic of tidying up: the Japanese art of decluttering and organizing. Over three million copies of this book has been sold! That’s a lot of people looking to tidy their environments and, in turn, reduce stress.
We all feel better when we have space around us. I’ve read a number of useful books about clearing clutter, organizing, and creating systems designed to keep life in its appropriate containers but this one is truly different. Several things Marie mentions, I resonate with.
IF CLOTHES COULD TALK
For instance, in energy medicine, I recognize that all things carry a vibration. So taking that a step further, I’ve felt as if clothes are co-creating with me to help me look good or not. Marie speaks about clothing and other household items as if they have feelings and don’t like being smushed and wrinkled at the bottom of a forgotten heap of clothing. I get it! Certain much-loved and very worn articles of clothing whisper to me that it’s time to let them go. Often, I put my fingers in my ears, refusing to hear them as I wear them, “one more time.”
THE WRONG WAY TO CLEAR CLUTTER
She also writes about the wrong way to approach clearing clutter. That is to clear one room at a time, as opposed to one category at a time. The wrong way is, of course, the exact approach most of us have practiced for years. Hence, having to keep buying books to finally discover a way that works. Marie believes, and outlines the steps, that we can, literally, clear our homes once. After that, it’s just a matter of keeping it tidy. What a glorious thing, right?
CLUTTER THAT’S PHYSICAL, MENTAL, EMOTIONAL, SPIRITUAL
Marie mostly concerns herself with physical clutter but I’m here to remind you that clutter also exists on the mental, emotional, and spiritual planes as well. We’ve got the whole month of June to discuss it!
